Voice Care
The importance of voice care
Not taking care of your voice or abusing it can cause permanent damage.
But things aren't always what they seem! We can do crazy things with our voices. Death metal singers can learn to scream for hours without even getting hoarse. But if singing and screaming hurts*, you'll probably end up coughing coughing like a mad-man!
If you've seem some amateur rock bands live, you have witnessed this!
(*Growling can cause a little pain and still be healthy)
Voice care for prolonged or chronic hoarseness
If you get chronically hoarse, you should consult a doctor! Hoarseness is usually caused by misuse of the voice, the flu or a cold. But it can also be a result of cancer! So if it's chronic, consult a doctor!
Prolonged or chronic hoarseness can also be a result of vocal nodules.
All pains, no gains
..Yet another reason to prefer music to sports!
In singing the saying no pains, no gains does not hold true. If singing is painful you need to find out what causes these pains.
If you get pains after a period of singing you need to take a break so that you don't harm yourself.
The things that cause pain
Lack of correct breath control can cause pain.
So can constrictions!
Constrictions cause a feeling of throat tightness. If your throat feels tight, you'll sound bad and may hurt yourself. And by singing this way you'll teach it to your subconscious!
Even though you like how you sound, you might limit yourself. And there IS a healthy way to make every sound you want to.
Sing the part in a more comfortable register at first, and add the effects you want to. Then gradually sing the part higher.
If you practice this way and it doesn't hurt, you will improve on a day to day basis!
Just don't rush it. If you can't seem to make it, alter your mouth and tongue position slightly until you find a way to do it.
And if you don't manage to fix your vocal problems, email me at mail@learn-how-to-sing.com and I'll be happy to help!

Voice care for vocal disorders
Vocal disorders can be nasty, and deserve medical attention. But if you want information about vocal disorders, and some help overcoming them I'll try to help you.
Just remember that I am not a doctor, so show this page to your doctor, and ask for her opinion first if you are suffering from these symptoms.
Voice care for temporary hoarseness and lost voice
Hoarseness is mainly caused by irritation of the vocal cords, and in some cases damage (nodules). The best way to treat this is to be silent. You should avoid speaking and you should not sing!
But if you do have to speak, do not whisper! This will do more harm than good. Try to speak freely if you absolutely have to!
You may also want to take cough suppressant meds if you cough a lot.
Another great tip is to drink a lot of water. This removes mucous from the throat.
If the air is dry, you might want to buy an air-moisturizer or take a shower and breathe in the moisture.
