Vocal warm up exercises
Vocal warm up exercises can really do a lot for your singing!
A guy I know went from getting hoarse after every concert to never getting hoarse when he started warming up his voice.
His voice also improved tenfolds!
So just by learning some simple ways to warm up the voice, you can sound both better and avoid vocal damage and hoarseness.
Smart voice warm ups should consist of two parts
The first part should consist of warming up the voice. The second part should consist of exercising the coordinations you want to sing in.
The first part - Vocal warm up exercises:
Humming on a five tone scale is a good way to start warming up your voice. But note that you shouldn't sing higher or lower than what is completely comfortable.
I uploaded this scale so that you can hum along with it:

The second part: vocal technique exercises
This part of the vocal warm up is mainly to get the vocal technique right before singing. If you are only practicing, you can skip this part, and do it while working on songs instead.
In this part of the warm up you can pretty much sing anything you want to. Just sing it slow, so that you don't make a lot of mistakes.
But note that you should not sing higher or lower than you can comfortably. If you feel any pain or throat tickles, you should temporarily transpose the song to a comfortable pitch, or pay more attention to your breath control.
If you are having difficulties singing all the vowels in a song, you may benefit from singing it on the vowel A, as in the word class(British).
When feel that you have warmed up the voice well enough, you can move on to singing regularly. But if your throat starts to feel tense, you should either take a break or go back to these exercises.
