Vocal Exercises
Vocal exercises don't take a lot of time
Doing vocal exercises for twenty minutes a day you can skyrocket your singing!
That's four times five minutes. Do it in the shower or while you're watching TV if you feel you can't spare those twenty daily minutes.
Get scale mp3's at my page on vocal scale exercises.
The reason for exercising the voice is to explore and teach good technique to your subconscious.
And if you repeatedly singing a song correctly will teach your body to do it right. If you repeatedly sing incorrectly, your body will remember and repeat this.
Think of how much faster one types on a keyboard after a couple of years of casual typing.
The "good" technique has become a part of the subconscious.
This is called muscle memory.
Before you sing, good singing technique should be fresh in your muscle memory. To prepare your body for singing you should do vocal warm up exercises.
How to exercise your voice
When your voice feels comfortable, try to sing a song you want to learn and watch out for parts that feels or sounds bad!
That's the reason for vocal exercises.
Try to sing the hard part in a comfortable pitch, /and or slower. This way your subconscious learns how to sing that part.
Your jaw and throat should always feel comfortable, and the vocal tone should sound crisp and nice.
If it feels like you're straining when you sing, you should do vocal breathing exercises. By controlling your breath when you sing you can become a much better singer.
Breath control is one of the single most important techniques to learn if you want to become a good singer.
And if you have difficulties sing high notes, you should read my article on how to sing high notes.
But it is not as difficult to figure out how to sing parts in for the middle and lower register as in the high vocal register.
You'll hopefully find out how to solve your middle and low range problems on this page.
Vocal exercises on lip-rolls
Lip-rolls means to roll your lips by singing or breathing out "through" closed lips. This way your lips start to vibrating fast.
To do lip-rolls, first purse your lips and make "kissing lips". (Make sure your lips are relaxed though.)
Then you should make a sound by blowing air through them.
And when you manage to blow air through your lips, you should add a tone to the lip-rolls. The tone should not be too high or too low, and should feel comfortable.
Lip-rolls are great because they keep you from tensing your throat. Just remember to stay in the coordination you want to sing the part in:
Singing lip-rolls in falsetto on a part that you want to sing in full voice will not help you on that song.
At first, do not sing too high on lip-rolls. You know it's too high if your throat hurts or tickles.
Vocal exercises on vowels
When you sing it is common to struggle more with some vowels than other. Singing scales on these vowels is a useful way to improve your singing.
When you sing scales on difficult vowels you should start in a comfortable part of your voice and go gradually towards the pitch that you want to sing.
But note that some vowels can cause constrictions in the high part. I have written about vowel modification in my how to sing high notes-article.
