Singing for beginners

Singing is a wonderful thing.. but singing for beginners can seem extremely difficult!

Of the hundreds of courses and techniques that all promise to make you sing like a saint

..There are few that are good.

But don't get me wrong!

Almost all techniques work. It's just that some works well, while some will only provide mediocre results and makes you think you have to be “gifted” to learn how to sing.

That's not true.

Singing is a skill, and within reasonable limits almost everything is possible!

How to train your voice

Beginner singers usually sing higher by forcing. It works to a small extent. It's just that it sounds bad and hurts.

And note that I'm not saying that power or volume is bad!

..It might just be that you aren't ready for it yet.

If your throat feels tense, you probably don't use enough breath support and get constrictions.

Practice going higher or deeper in pitch very slowly. Work at removing tension at pitches that feel almost comfortable, but not entirely.

And please don't start off too high or low in you range. Take it gradually.

Breath Control

Breath control means to have a controlled release of air while singing. It is done by slowly pulling in the lower part of the belly.

You can try it by saying “Shh” and pulling you belly inwards. Notice that you can hold the “Shh” much longer than if you don't pull your belly in.

Breath control helps you sing higher notes and sound better. Read more about this in my vocal breathing exercises-article.

That is a really important concept for both skilled and beginning singers!
